Points of View Speaker Series: What Good is an Academy?

Thursday, March 1

Art Community Parkway District

The occasion of the Royal Academy’s 250th birthday, the institution on which PAFA was modeled in its 1805 founding, offers an opportunity to reflect on the role of an art academy today. What relevance can an academic education have for a young artist working today? What are the roles of working from observation and study of classical form?  Where does discipline based learning fit in an interdisciplinary art world? And what use is there in mastering traditional conventions when they are soon to be broken?

Panelists addressing these questions and more will include Susan Cahan, Dean of the Tyler School of Art; Christopher LeBrun, President of the Royal Academy of Arts; Jane South, Chair of the Fine Arts Department at Pratt Institute; Didier William, Chair of the MFA Program at PAFA; Arthur Watson, President of the Royal Scottish Academy; Moderated by Clint Jukkala, Dean of PAFA.
