Army of Shadows
Monday, March 26
In Nazi-occupied France, imprisoned Resistance fighter Phillippe (Lino Ventura) escapes his captors and rejoins his network in Marseille, which includes a dashing ex-pilot (Jean-Pierre Cassel), a housewife (Simone Signoret), and a philosopher (Paul Meurisse). Adapted from Joseph Kessel’s novel and drawing on Melville’s own experiences in the Resistance, Army of Shadows forgoes action-movie glamour in favor of a gritty study of conviction in the face of futility. Coldly received in France’s post-May 1968 political landscape, the film was not widely seen until its 2006 re-release, when it was hailed as a masterpiece.
