Two expeditions converged in the Mississippi Delta during the "Freedom Summer" of 1964. One was comprised of young blues enthusiasts (including guitarist John Fahey) who'd come to locate two lost legends–Son House and Skip James–and attempt to lure them back to the stage. On June 21st, they found their men. The very same day, a group of three civil rights activists on a campaign to register black voters were abducted and murdered by the Ku Klux Klan outside of Philadelphia, MS. Two Trains Runnin' explores how these events were related and what they meant, tracing the connection between the blues and racial injustice through American history and into the present day. Narrated by rapper Common, the film features mesmerizing archival footage as well as performances by contemporary artists including Lucinda Williams, Buddy Guy, and Gary Clark, Jr.

Philadelphia bluesman Georgie "the Blacksmith" Bonds will perform a selection of songs prior to the film. Stay with us after the screening for a discussion featuring Georgie Bonds; Jonny Meister, host of WXPN's The Blues Show; and Herman Beavers, Professor of English and Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania and author of the poetry book Obsidian Blues.
