Now, Voyager

Monday, June 11

Film History Suburbs & Beyond

Controlled by her domineering mother, neurotic wallflower Charlotte Vale (Bette Davis) is coaxed out of her shell by a kindly doctor (Claude Rains) and encouraged to experience what the world has to offer. Sparks fly when she meets Jerry (Paul Henreid), a debonair dreamboat prone to lighting two cigarettes at once. When the newly liberated Charlotte learns that he is trapped in an unhappy marriage, she must confront the limits of love. Set to Max Steiner’s swooning score, Now, Voyagerendures as the apex “weepie,” weaving love, self-discovery, and sacrifice into an intoxicating and unforgettable melodrama.
