Modesto, California, 1962, the last night of summer. The local teenagers (a cast of future stars including Ron Howard, Harrison Ford, Richard Dreyfuss, and Cindy Williams) while away the night by dallying at the drive-in, cruising the drag, flirting, and contemplating life to come, while the ever-present DJ Wolfman Jack spins hits over the airwaves. In his most earthbound film, George Lucas conjured a fleeting moment in teenage life and American history—those innocent days before the responsibilities of adulthood, those innocent years before the decade’s upheavals.
