District 9

Thursday, November 1

Film Suburbs & Beyond

Years after a spacecraft full of starving, desperate alien refugees makes first contact with Earth, the so-called “prawns” are confined to a squalid shantytown outside of Johannesburg. While overseeing a camp relocation project, a dorky bureaucrat (Sharlto Copley) is exposed to alien DNA and begins to undergo startling changes. Reflecting back on South Africa's legacy of apartheid, District 9 is more relevant than ever in the face of today's refugee crises.

Stay for a post-film discussion with On Justice Fellow Jenn Bulcock, Ph.D. Presented in conjunction with Cabrini University’s Wolfington Center, the On Justice series explores the intersection of cinema and social justice.
