Cinematics for Still Photographers - Online

More than any previous medium, the movies brought visual representation to a mass audience. And to that end, film directors and cinematographers have had a profound influence on how we make meaning of what we see. The deep focus of Citizen Kane, the hatchet lighting and improbable angles of Double Indemnity, the golden hour colors of Days of Heaven, and the incarcerating shadows and occluded frames of In the Mood for Love all construct both the mood and the frame though which we interpret the relationship of the filmic world to our own. In this course we’ll examine these films and others, and use our findings for weekly assignments and reviews to discover how cinematic thinking can influence and enhance our making of still images.
