As the Druids prepare to revolt against their Roman occupiers, the priestess Norma is divided between her loyalty to her people and her love for the Roman official Pollione, who has recently started an affair with the temple acolyte Adalgisa. With its challenging score, including the famous Casta diva aria, Norma was dubbed "the Everest of opera" by critic James Jordan.
