Unlike a traditional photography book, catalog or monograph, the term ‘artists' book’ refers to publications that have been conceived as artworks in their own right. Understanding a book as an artwork invites a reflection on the properties of the book form itself. In this four week class we will discuss the many different forms the artists' book can take and how material informs every decision of the process. As a group we will look at various examples and discuss the process of conceptualization, design, and materials. Time will be devoted to workshoping student's ideas, but students are not required to make a book in this course.
