Theater 5: Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets

Las Vegas, late 2016. For a certain type of misfit, dive bar Roaring 20s is a place of sanctuary and community. Now it’s shutting its doors for good, and through the last day of service, its regulars drift in to mark—and mourn—the end of an era. Recalling the cinema of Robert Altman and John Cassavetes, along with barroom classics like The Iceman Cometh, this docu-fiction hybrid coalesces its many remarkable moments into a profound snapshot of America. “If it’s not a strict documentary and it’s also not a conventional fiction feature, then what exactly is this movie? Does the distinction matter?” wrote Mark Olsen in the Los Angeles Times. “The most important thing is that it is genuinely great.”
