Join us to celebrate and support the work Philadelphia Orchard Project does planting orchards in vacant lots, community gardens, schoolyards, and other urban spaces in Philadelphia neighborhoods where people experience limited access to fresh fruit. Over 20 Artists have donated pieces of artwork to be sold for 60 dollars, the price of a tree donation. When you purchase a piece of artwork that money will go directly to POP who will be present at the opening. They will give you and the artist a tree donation certificate. Enjoy music and cider from Hale & True Cider.
The other half of the space will feature an installation by Vivien Wise, exploring our social relationship to trees and the possible ways we create a feeling of belonging with the landscape. Vivien’s piece Tree Connection, provides an opportunity to learn about and explore a connection to the land and increase knowledge of and appreciation for Philadelphia trees.Vivien Wise is an MFA candidate in Fibers and Material Studies at the Tyler School of Art, Temple University in Philadelphia. She has a BFA in Fibers from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore. Through explorations of materiality and tactility, her work comments on the concept of shared spaces and connections. Vivien searches for connections between others and herself to find community in this way. She mainly makes objects, in which she incorporates function through either the object itself or an implied action. Additionally, Vivien integrates a personal domestic history, especially connected to her mother and grandmothers. This personal domestic history, as well as an interest in the function of objects, is based primarily in craft. Vivien is drawn and connected to the process and materiality of the rag rug, the quilt as an art object, and the community formed by a knitting circle. Sustainability as a general concept is woven into the fabric of her being and consumption/waste is an important consideration for her.
